International Plastic-Free Day on May 25th

plastic-free day

Giolitti’s Delicatessen and Marketplace is recognizing International Plastic-Free Day on May 25th. We encourage our customers to avoid using and buying single-use plastics today to help the environment!

Giolitti’s Delicatessen and Marketplace recognizes International Plastic-Free Day on May 25th, a campaign developed by an organization called Free the Ocean. For International Plastic-Free Day, we encourage all of our customers to recognize the single-use plastic they use daily and the impact that it can have on our environment, including our oceans. Statistically, single-use plastic utensils can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. As part of International Plastic-Free Day on May 25th, we encourage all of our customers to stand with Free the Ocean’s mission to avoid buying, using, and refusing plastic products.

Try Going Plastic-Free for One Day

We encourage all of our customers to attempt to go plastic-free for one day on May 25th. When you’re running your daily errands or stopping at a restaurant for a quick bite to eat, you should refuse single-use plastic and avoid purchasing it. Seek alternative methods over opting for single-use plastic. For example, bring reusable cutlery if you choose to go out for dinner one evening or store your marketplace items in a reusable cloth bag instead of selecting plastic. At the end of your day, consider how many single-use plastic items you encountered and how it’s become a regular part of our daily lives that contributes to plastic pollution.

Single-Use Plastic Pollution: Why is it Problematic?

Single-use plastic pollution is problematic for our environment, primarily our oceans. While single-use plastic is incredibly convenient, it has an immensely negative impact on our environment and oceans. As society continues to rely on single-use plastics for convenience purposes, these single-use plastics pile up in landfills and have contributed to over 300 million tons of plastic waste on a worldwide scale. Additionally, since single-use plastics can take upwards of 1000 years to decompose, we are accumulating plastic at a higher rate than we are capable of eliminating it. The result? Plastics end up in our rivers and oceans, are consumed by wildlife, and ultimately consumed by humans. The consumption of microplastics can cause many health problems for animals and humans alike.

Just Say No to Single-Use Plastic

Join us on May 25th to say no to single-use plastic for one day. Avoid buying and using single-use plastic to help lessen the impact of single-use plastic pollution within our environment. Through International Plastic-Free Day, we can all work together to reduce our single-use plastic pollution within society. Let’s keep your family safe, healthy and give back to our environment as much as we can!
