October to December is olive oil season in Italy, as the cool, fall weather is the perfect time to harvest olives. Italy is one of the world’s largest producers of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, as it is an essential ingredient in Italian cuisine. The Pressing Method
There are various methods for making olive oil- the “pressed” method means that during the extraction process of the oil from olives, no heat or chemical additives were used. This is because heat or chemicals can ruin the flavor and smell. Extra virgin olive oil is what comes out of the first pressing, and is actually one of the few truly healthy oils. The pressing method allows the oil to retain its full nutritional value, and the oil is a mono-unsaturated fat with high amounts of anti-oxidants and a low content of cholesterol.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is made by crushing olives and extracting the juice, but there are many more factors that go into creating the perfect flavor. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between olive oil and extra virgin olive oil? The “extra” refers to an increased purity in the product, as it is the only cooking oil made without chemicals and industrial refining. In fact, the oil needs to pass tests and regulations to be considered “extra,” as there can’t be any taste defects and it needs to form a flavor of fresh olives. This is why extra virgin olive oil is the most expensive out of all olive oils- but the delicious flavor is worth the price! It is not meant to be cooked with, but instead should be enjoyed on top of bread, cheese, pasta, or pizza to add flavor.
Where To Find The Best Olive Oil In Italy
Various Italian regions produce high-quality extra virgin olive oil, but oils produced in Tuscany tend to be the most popular. Tuscany has the optimal climate for olives, and the region is well known for excellent oil. However, many other regions in Italy produce quality oil, such as Umbria, Abruzzo, Puglia, Sicily and more!
