August is National Sandwich Month, and Giolitti Deli has a wide variety of delicious Italian sandwiches on our menu! This week, we are featuring ‘The Milano’ sandwich, which includes prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, green leaf lettuce, tomato, olive oil, and kalamata olives on our crispy Italian baguette. Prosciutto translates to “ham” in Italian but is used to describe an uncooked, dry-cured ham in the United States. There are typically two types of prosciutto- prosciutto cotto, which is cooked, and prosciutto crudo, which is uncooked, yet cured. It is a fatty cut of meat that has a very buttery texture and melts in the mouth- and is delicious on its own, with vegetables, on a meat board, on pizza, or on a sandwich!

Fresh Mozzarella

At Giolitti Deli, we use the freshest ingredients and make some of our mozzarella from scratch! Fresh mozzarella is very different from what you typically find at the grocery store, as it’s much more milky, tender, and mild. The most essential ingredient for making mozzarella is the milk, and it is traditionally made from Italian buffalo milk, called Mozzarella di Bufala. However, there are other types of the cheese, such as Fior di latte, which is made from fresh pasteurized or unpasteurized cow’s milk, Mozzarella Affumicata, which is smoked mozzarella, and low-moisture mozzarella, which is made from whole or part skimmed milk.
