Learn how Giolitti Deli is celebrating Earth Day!

We just celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd, a day that focuses on increasing environmental awareness. When it started in 1970, Earth Day was mainly focused on improving water and air quality, and protecting the planet we call home. In 2019, however, our focus is on the biggest crisis facing Earth- climate change. Earth day is more important than ever, and of course, we should all be making an effort to help our planet every single day. Paper Straws

We are proud to announce that Giolitti Deli is now using paper straws to continue our efforts to recycle and reduce waste. Straws have been making headlines lately, as various restaurants and chains, including Starbucks, have decided to eliminate plastic drinking straws in exchange for paper straws. Americans use approximately 500 million straws per day, and a large percentage of those straws end up in the ocean. A 2017 study found that over 8 billion plastic straws are polluting the world’s beaches and harming marine life. On the other hand, paper straws are biodegradable, take less time to decompose, and are safer for wildlife.

ReCORK

Giolitti Deli will also be working with one of our wine suppliers, Bacchus Importers, to contribute to a program called ReCORK. They are North America’s largest wine cork recycling program and have collected over 103 million corks to date. They have drop-off locations for anyone to contribute their used corks, as well as retail locations that carry ReCORK products. Bacchus has been donating back hundreds of pounds of cork every year, and Giolitti Deli is proud to start collecting corks for them. After the natural wine corks are collected, they are repurposed for a variety of uses. Using recycled cork in products extends the life of a sustainable material, keeps it from the waste stream, and supports the conservation of cork oak forests.
